From Middle Dutch maerschalc, maerscalc, marscalc, from Old Dutch mariskalk, from Proto-West Germanic *marhaskalk. Equivalent to mare (horse, mare) +‎ schalk (servant). Doublet of marechaussee. This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
