From Proto-Algonquian *ešinaᐧkwatwi (to look (a certain way)). From li- (in a certain manner, preverb) +‎ na- (to see, verb medial) +‎ -ëkw- (inverts subject and object, inverse theme marker) +‎ at (nominalizer, final).
