From Proto-Finnic *lako, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *lagą. Compare Old Norse lag (“stratum, layer”). Cognate with Estonian lagu, Ingrian lako, Livonian la’ggõ and Veps lago. Doublet of laki (“law, statute”) and laki (“summit; ceiling”).
