From Old Cornish kelli, from Proto-Celtic *kallī.

Finnish[edit]
Etymology 1[edit]
Probably related to kelliä (possibly as kelliä + -i), which can in dialects also mean "to copulate" (through a similar development as seen in maata (“to lie”)). There are many dialectal variants as well (e.g. kelles, kelkku, kelkutin), which could hint at a sound-symbolic origin.
