From Middle Breton caffout, from Proto-Celtic *kab-ei-tu (compare Cornish kavos), verbal noun of *kab- (compare Welsh cael), alteration of Proto-Indo-European *kh₂pi- (compare Latin capere, English have, heave, Albanian kap).
