Etymology

[edit]

From earlier kasangbahay, from the /ŋ/ becoming /m/ before /b/ due to nasal assimilation. By surface analysis, ka- +‎ sam- +‎ bahay (house), literally someone sharing with a single house. Commonly mistaken to be a blend of kasama (companion) +‎ bahay (house).
