Etymology

From Old Danish køpæ (buy, purchase), from Old Norse kaupa, past tense keypta, from Proto-Germanic *kaupōną, *kaupijaną, cognate with German kaufen and Dutch kopen. The Germanic verb is probably a loan from Latin caupō (tradesman).
