Etymology

Inessive plural of an uncertain word, which may be either the possibly dialectal hode (“sheepskin”). Alternatively the root may be a borrowing from Proto-Germanic [Term?] (compare Old High German huota, whence German Hut (“care, protection”)), or from Russian ходить (xoditʹ), whence Karelian hoteissa (“ongoing”).
