Etymology

From Middle Dutch hengelen, equivalent to hengel (fishing rod) +‎ -en. The fishing sense is influenced by Dutch angel (fishhook), Middle Dutch angelen (to pierce with a hook). Compare also hengelroede (fishing rod) with dialectal or obsolete Dutch angelroede (fishing rod), German Angelrute (fishing rod).
