half title (plural half titles)

  1. (book printing) A page before the title page in a book, bearing the title but no further details.
  2. (book printing) An abbreviated title of a book at the head of the first page of the text, or a title of any subdivision of a book when printed in a full page.

Usage notes

The half title appears on the recto of a leaf whose verso is blank. A frontispiece (illustration facing the title page) might appear between the half title and the title-page.
