Etymology

Equivalent to høj (high) +‎ -de (noun suffix): from Old Danish høgdh, from Old Norse hæð, from Proto-Germanic *hauhiþō. Other cognates are Swedish höjd, English height and Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌿𐌷𐌹𐌸𐌰 (hauhiþa). In Danish and Swedish, the noun has been remodelled after the adjective.
