[edit]From Middle Dutch gesprec (“speaking, speech”), from Old Dutch *gisprekki, from Proto-Germanic *gasprakją. Equivalent to ge- + spreken. Its use as a term for “conversation” dates to early Modern Dutch, in this sense it ultimately displaced older gespraak.
