Etymology

i +‎ medel +‎ tid, at least since 1530: i midhell tidh, same as Danish imidlertid, Norwegian imidlertid, Middle Low German middeler tit, similar to English meanwhile. Already in the 1580s, the use started to shift from time (= meanwhile) to cause (= however).
