From Old Irish eórna (compare Irish eorna, Manx oarn), from *yewornio-, from Proto-Celtic *yeu- (compare Breton yell (spelt)), from Proto-Indo-European *yéwos (barley) (compare Lithuanian javaĩ (grain), Persian جو (jaw), Sanskrit यव (yava)).
