From Middle Low German drȫge, from Old Saxon *drōgi, from Proto-Germanic *draugiz, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰerǵʰ- (to strengthen; become hard or solid), from *dʰer- (to hold, hold fast, support). Compare Dutch droog, West Frisian droech, English dry; compare also German trocken.
