Inherited from Vulgar Latin *depānāre or *depēnāre, from Latin pānus (thread wound upon the bobbin), from Ancient Greek πῆνος (pênos). Compare Aromanian deapin, dipinari, Italian dipanare, Catalan debanar, Spanish devanar, Portuguese dobar, Sardinian demanare.
