Inherited from Old French contreroller, contreroler, from contrerole, from Medieval Latin contrarotulum (a counter-roll or register used to verify accounts), from Latin contrā (against, opposite) + Medieval Latin rotulus, Latin rotula (roll, a little wheel), diminutive of rota (a wheel).
