From Middle Dutch boecstaef, boecstave, from Old Dutch *bōkstavo, *buokstavo, from Proto-Germanic *bōkastabô, *bōkastabaz (“letter, written symbol”), equivalent to boek + staaf. Compare German Buchstabe, English bookstave.
