Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *bed-, *bod-, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰedʰh₂-, *bʰodʰh₂-. Cognate with Latvian best (to dig, bury), Old Prussian embaddusisi (they stick), Proto-Slavic *bosti (to stab, sting), and Latin fodio (to dig).
