Etymology

Said by Hayami-Allen to be from N- (nominalizer) +‎ fela (to open), with reduplication, possibly as that which opens the sky. Likely cognate with Sahu ḇelanga (lightning). However, also compare Proto-Trans-New Guinea *(mb,m)elak (lightning, light).
