Old English
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Origin obscure. Perhaps from Proto-West Germanic *bedukōn or *badikōn (“to petition repeatedly, beg”), equivalent to bedu + -cian. Compare Old High German betalōn (“to beg”).
Alternatively, perhaps derived from Proto-West Germanic *bedagō, from Proto-Germanic *bedagô (“beggar”).
