Etymology

[edit]

Origin obscure. Perhaps from Proto-West Germanic *bedukōn or *badikōn (to petition repeatedly, beg), equivalent to bedu +‎ -cian. Compare Old High German betalōn (to beg).

Alternatively, perhaps derived from Proto-West Germanic *bedagō, from Proto-Germanic *bedagô (beggar).
