Aromanian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

It is generally agreed to be from Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- (to gleam), but there is disagreement whether the word is one of the earliest (Proto-)Romanian loans from Proto-Slavic *bolto, or whether it is a pre-Roman substrate word. Compare Daco-Romanian baltă. There is also an Albanian cognate, baltë. Compare also Serbo-Croatian blȁto, Russian боло́то (bolóto).
