[edit]Borrowed from Catalan anxova (“anchovy”), in turn from Spanish anchova, from Ligurian anciôa, from Vulgar Latin *apiuva, from Latin aphyē, from Ancient Greek ἀφύη (aphúē, “small fry”). Doublet of anchoa and anchova.
