[edit]Etymology
[edit]From the Hausa waƙa (song). Entered Yorùbá through Islamic influence from the Hausa, with the first literary usage of the word being written in an Ajami manuscript written by Salihu Apomu from the center of Islamic learning of Yorubaland, Ìlọrin. In his manuscript the word simply meant song, which is the same as the original Hausa definition.
