From the fusion of Middle High German underschiet, underschit, Middle High German underschide, and Middle High German underscheit, unterscheid, from Old High German untarskeit, untarskeid; derived synchronically from unterscheiden. Compare Dutch onderscheid, Hunsrik Unnerschied, Low German Ünnerscheed, Saterland Frisian Unnerskeed.
