Etymology

From Middle High German umbeganc, from Old High German umbigang (a course, return), from Proto-Germanic *umbigangaz (a going around, circuit), equivalent to um- +‎ Gang (a gang, going). Cognate with Dutch omgang, English umgang, Danish omgang, Swedish omgång, Norwegian omgang.
