Etymology

[edit]

I have added a paraphrase of what Coromines & Pascual say. Some details however do not sit well with me.

1) Why is the Spanish word masculine if the proposed Latin etymon is feminine (*pertica medialis) and if various Portuguese forms derived from Spanish are also feminine (almeara, almeada)?

2) The proposal that regional Spanish ameal acquired its /a-/ from the definite article la also requires ameal to be feminine in the dialect in question. Is it? Nicodene (talk) 08:51, 29 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
