From Turkish Sivas and Ottoman Turkish سیواس (Sivas), from Byzantine Greek Σεβάστεια (Sebásteia), from Ancient Greek Σεβαστός (Sebastós) + -εια (-eia, -ia: forming place names), from σεβαστός (sebastós, venerable, august) used as a calque of Latin Augustus. Doublet of Sebastia.
