Etymology[edit]

Has been compared to Proto-Mongolic *laka (sheathfish) and Proto-Japonic *nakatay (a kind of fish; eel).

However; Doerfer rejects the Mongolic cognate and considers it as a loanword from Tungusic, because native Mongolic words don't allow initial *l-. [1]
