From Proto-Indo-European *kh₂ewl-o-s, from *kh₂ewl- (tumor, rupture, hernia). Cognate with Proto-Balto-Slavic *kū́ˀlāˀ (> Lithuanian kūlas (umbilical hernia), Proto-Slavic *kỳla (outgrowth, hernia)).
