From Proto-Indo-European *dʰengʷ-o-, *dʰ(e/o)ngʷ-(o)-i-; according to Pokorny, from *dʰewh₂- (mist, smoke, haze). Related to Hittite 𒁕𒀭𒆪𒄿 (da-an-ku-i, dark, black, murky).
