- (Belgium) First attested as ophoven in 1167. Compound of Middle Dutch op (“higher up, upper”) and the dative plural form of hof (“farmstead, homestead”). See also Limburgish Opove.
- (Echt-Susteren) First attested as uphouen in 1224. Compound of op (“higher up, upper”) and the dative plural form of hof (“farmstead, homestead”). See also Limburgish Ophaove.
- (Leudal) First attested as Ophooven in 1803-1820. Compound of op (“higher up, upper”) and the dative plural form of hof (“farmstead, homestead”). See also Limburgish Ophaove.
- (Sittard-Geleen) First attested as Ophoven in 1803-1820. Compound of op (“higher up, upper”) and the dative plural form of hof (“farmstead, homestead”). So named to distinguish the area from Overhoven. See also Limburgish Ophaove.
