From Middle High German mūsfalle, mūsvalle, from Old High German mūsfalla, from Proto-West Germanic *mūsfallā (mousetrap), equivalent to Maus +‎ -e- +‎ Falle. Cognate with German Low German Muusfalle, Muusfall (mousetrap), Dutch muizenval (mousetrap), Saterland Frisian Muusefalle (mousetrap), English mousefall (mousetrap).
