Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese Lugo, from Latin Lūcus Augustī, founded by Augustus as capital of the Roman district of Gallaecia Lucense after the conquest of northwestern Iberia. From lūcus (sacred wood). Compare Portuguese Lugo.
