Czech[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The adjective Klášterní is derived from klášter (monastery).

The name Hradisko is from hradisko (fortified settlement), which probably lay near the place already before the monastery was founded.[1] Alternative theory suggests that the monastery started to be called this way because of the way in which it had been built.[2]

The first evidence of the name is from 1126 when it was mentioned in a Latin text as Gradisch, which seems to be derived from a predecessor of the Czech hradiště (fortified settlement).[3][4] Written evidence of the Czech name comes e. g. from 1515, when it was written as Hradisscze, later in 1526 it was spelled as Hradistie and in 1599 Hradisstie,[4] all the forms corresponding to the modern spelling of the term for the fortified settlement hradiště. Later forms with central Moravian dialect ending -isko started appearing, such as Gradisko in 1633, and finally prevailed.[3]
