From Middle High German hert, from Old High German herta, from Proto-West Germanic *herdu.

The modern consonantism is Central and Low German (compare Middle Low German hērde). Cognate with English herd, Danish hjord, Swedish hjord, Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌳𐌰 (hairda).
