From Middle Low German Frankrīke, from Old Saxon *Frankrīki. The name is a compound of Proto-West Germanic *frankō (a Frank) and *rīkī (kingdom).

Equivalent to franker (the Franks) +‎ rike (realm). Compare Danish Frankrig, Dutch Frankrijk, German Frankreich.
