From Vulgar Latin *fūriōn-, whence also Old French fuiron (ferret, weasel). Ultimately from Latin fūr (thief). Cognate with Limburgish fuur, vuurs (polecat). The forms Fürner, Für(d)er are extended with the suffix -er.
