German
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from French balcon, from Italian balcone. Doublet of Balken.
Pronunciation
[edit]- IPA(key): /balˈkɔŋ/ (northern and central Germany), /balˈkɔ̃/, /balˈkɔn/ (rare or high register)
- IPA(key): /balˈkoːn/ (southern Germany, Austria, high register in Switzerland), /ˈbalkɔn/ (usual in Switzerland)
Audio: (file)
Noun
[edit]Balkon m (strong, genitive Balkons, plural Balkone or Balkons)
- (architecture) balcony (an accessible structure extending from a building, especially outside a window or overlooking a stage)
Usage notes
[edit]- The plural Balkone is always pronounced /balˈkoːnə/. Accordingly, only this plural is used by speakers who say /balˈkoːn/ in the singular. Other speakers sometimes switch to the same pronunciation in the plural. Otherwise they use the plural Balkons (pronounced like the respective singular form + /s/).
Declension
[edit]Declension of Balkon [masculine, strong]
Alternative forms
[edit]- Blk. (abbreviation in advertisements)
