Proper noun

[edit]

the A-League (plural A-Leagues)

  1. (soccer) the top professional men's soccer league in Australia and New Zealand
  2. (soccer) any of the three leagues that fall under the A-Leagues banner (the men's, women's and youth leagues)

Usage notes

[edit]

Initially, the A-League was the men's league, the W-League was the women's league and the Y-League was the youth league (with divisions for men and women). However, in 2021, the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) was founded and all three leagues (along with the E-League, an esports league) were renamed to the A-League Men, A-League Women and the A-League Youth, all under the A-Leagues banner. Nevertheless, the men's league is still commonly referred to as the A-League by fans (and the women's league the W-League).
