Etymology

From Proto-Athabaskan *tł’it’ (liquid or granular matter moves or splashes; to fart).

Cognate root found in Ahtna naghitlʼiitʼ ((water, sand) fell down), ztlʼiitʼ (it farted).

Also occur in Navajo with the meaning “to limber up, to rest up”, of uncertain derivation.
