First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 가지〮 (Yale: kàcí), from Old Korean 種叱 (*KAc).

Originally a suffixed form of Middle Korean 갖〮 (kác, id.), which was already uncommon by the 15th century.
