From Proto-Karen *hmeᴮ (fire) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *me² (idem) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *mej (fire). Cognate with Pa'o Karen မေႏ, S'gaw Karen မ့ၣ် (maỳ), Western Pwo မ့ၪ.
