From Old Georgian წუხილი (c̣uxili), from Proto-Kartvelian *c̣ux-. Cognate with Svan ლიწხუ̂ა̈უ̂ი (lic̣xûäûi).

Formed by affixing the Proto-Kartvelian verbal stem *c̣ux- with the *-il- suffix. Old Armenian ծուխ (cux) is a Kartvelian borrowing.
