Etymology

Compound of అమ్ము (ammu, selling) +‎ కడ (kaḍa, place); possibly originating from Proto-Dravidian (*am + *kaṭi). Cognate with Kannada ಅಂಗಡಿ (aṅgaḍi, store, shop), Tamil அங்காடி (aṅkāṭi, market, bazaar) and Malayalam അങ്ങാടി (aṅṅāṭi, market).
