Inherited from Prakrit 𑀉𑀁𑀤𑀭 (uṃdara), from Sanskrit उन्दुर (undura), उन्दुरु (unduru), उन्दरु (undaru), etc. from a lost Vedic substrate language.[1] Compare Marathi 𑘄𑘽𑘟𑘨 (undar), Hindi उंदुर (undur), Sinhalese උඳුරා (uⁿdurā).
