Inherited from Sanskrit हृदय (hṛdaya), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰŕ̥dayam, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱḗr. Cognate to Gujarati હૈયું (haiyũ), Marwari हिवड़ा (hivṛā), Assamese হিয়া (hia), Bengali হিয়া (hiẏa), Punjabi ਹੀਆ (hīā). Doublet of हृदय (hŕday) and दिल (dil). Compare English heart, Latin cor.
