[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *pántaHs, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pántaHs, from Proto-Indo-European *póntoh₁s (“path, road”), from *pent-. Cognate with Proto-Germanic *paþaz (an Iranian borrowing, whence English path), Ancient Greek πόντος (póntos), πάτος (pátos), Latin pons, Old Armenian հուն (hun, “riverbed”).
