From Proto-Indo-Iranian *čárma, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kérmn̥ (skin, hide, pelt).

Cognate with Avestan 𐬗𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬨𐬀𐬥 (carəman), Old Persian 𐎨𐎼𐎶𐎴 (c-r-m-n /⁠carman⁠/) (whence Persian چرم (čarm)), Latin corium (skin), Proto-Slavic *kora (bark).
