From Proto-Semitic *ḏbb, from Proto-Afroasiatic *ðuṗṗ. Compare Mlahsö ܕܷܕܒ݂ܐ (dedvo), Classical Syriac ܕܒܒܐ (debbāḇā, dabbāḇā), Arabic ذُبَابَة (ḏubāba), and Hebrew זְבוּב (zəḇûḇ).
